In Action, Chuck Schumer, House Action, John Faso, Kirsten Gillibrand, National Action, Senate Action

On Thursday (June 21) the House voted down the “Goodlatte Bill” and was unsuccessful in getting Republican support for the Ryan Compromise Bill.  The House will vote this week on the compromise.

Neither addresses indefinite detention of children and families seeking asylum.  Keep the pressure on your calls matter.

As the outrage rises over family separation at the boarder Rep. Faso has yet to take action.  His spokesman stated “Congressman Faso believes this is a humanitarian issue and does not want children separated from their parents at the border.  He is reviewing recently released immigration legislation negotiated in the House of Representatives that would address this issue.”  But this is not enough

Let’s call Faso to vote NO on the compromise immigration bill scheduled this week as it still does not addresses indefinite detention of children and families seeking asylum, includes raced biased changes to our immigration system and the bill is taking Dreamers hostage in exchange for spending on the wall.    (see Further Actions below to stop family separation)

Make sure Rep Faso hears from you on why the immigration bill does not represent American values as an immigrant nation.

CALL SCRIPT Faso

Caller:  Hello! My name is [name] and I’m calling from [town, zip].

I’m calling today to tell Rep Faso to vote NO on both the compromise immigration bill.  This bill does not address indefinite detention of children and families seeking asylum.  Further, the bill is taking Dreamers hostage in exchange for dramatic spending on the wall and include race biased changes to our immigration system. If Rep Faso supports immigrants and non race biased immigration laws for our nation’s growth, he will vote no.

Further Actions:

  1. Help speak out on this issue by joining our visit to Faso’s office Friday June 29th and joining a local Families Belong Together march being scheduled across the country on June 3oth.
  2. Call Senators Gillibrand and Schumer and thank them for their support of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s bill to halt family separations.
  3. Even if our reps have already signed on to the legislation to end family separation, there’s still more they can do. Visits to the sites where detained children are being held apart from their parents by leaders like Senator Merkley have focused attention on this ongoing horror, and kept it there (https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/sen-jeff-merkley-talks-his-visit-to-immigration-detention-centers-1249651267671). Let’s ask our members of Congress to follow his lead, go to these sites, talk with the children, and amplify their voices.
  4. Nearly 2000 children have been separated from their parents at the border. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-children/government-says-nearly-2000-child-separations-at-mexico-border-in-under-two-months-idUSKBN1JB2SF  We can file a complaint against the policy of family separation with The Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties within the Dept. of Homeland Security. Also, The Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) of the US Department of Homeland Security investigates complaints filed by the public. Let’s flood the office with complaints about ICE—family separation.

  5. Sleeping Giants  and GrabYourWallet have both been behind the scenes uncovering which companies are financially benefiting from the child separation policy.  We now know the names of two contractors that are coordinating these child shelters: A) MVM Inc. (Twitter: @MVMINC Phone: (571)223-4500), and B) General Dynamics (Twitter: @GDMS “Ethics helpline”: 800-433-8442).  Let’s contact them by phone, Twitter, or by using the email addresses listed here to tell them what we think:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tPp7M2_GwQ7IeB9mHhYAHtHSZMEbhkKS
