Thanks to all who joined a March for Our Lives march on Saturday. The young people of America are successfully using their voice and peaceful protest to bring change. A few small victories and what went right to note:
- For the first time in nearly two decades, more people have a negative view of the NRA than positive.
- More companies are embracing gun control: Citibank will now require that all retail clients ban bump stocks and stop selling guns to people under 21. YouTube will block videos promoting gun sales or teaching people how to build firearms. Kroger will no longer sell print magazines featuring assault rifles.
- A Republican in Maine dropped his bid for a state House seat after crassly insulting two Parkland high school survivors—but not before inspiring a young Democratic woman to run for office.
- The Omnibus spending bill also takes a step in the right direction on gun control, it “clarifies” that the CDC can’t use taxpayer funds to promote or advocate for gun control, but specifies that the CDC does have the authority to conduct research on gun violence. This weakens the “Dickey Amendment” which prohibited the CDC from gun research.
Please continue to support the students and the resistance. Studies show that when 3.5% of the population is active in peaceful protest, real change begins. We’re are currently at 2.9% – consider how you can help tip the scales?
This week begins March Recess for Rep. Faso:
We can expect business as usual – No Town Hall, but plenty of fundraising events with his supporters. Join us in protest – at secretive fundraiser for John #NoShowFaso & #ElusiveElise Stefanik Tuesday, March 17th at the Ft Orange Club in Albany.
We now will build on the momentum created by the students and call our representatives to push for Common Sense Gun Legislation. The student’s success will help keep Republicans on the Defense for midterm elections. Staying with the theme, call our Senator’s to stop the NRA’s Favorite Lawyer, Nielson, from becoming a Federal Judge.
Urgent Local Action:
Submit Comments this Week on Fracking in the Delaware Basin to protect our water, as the comment window will close by the end of week.
FlipNY19:
Lastly, but probably the most important, our work of talking to neighbors, knocking on doors, registering voters and making phone calls to flip NY19 and replace Faso continues. If you are not already working with a NY19 Candidate campaign to collect signatures to put candidates on the ballot or a local action group to register and identify voters, be sure to signup with NY19Votes and get engaged.
There are many ways to participate, each action helps tip the scales. Consider writing a letter to the editor.
A little motivation from Joe Biden this week. He was quoted in a discussion with the Blue Collar Caucus “If we don’t win the House, Trump is there for eight years. I’m serious.” he added “So, no pressure.”
