Jan. 19th was the 13th anniversary of the Citizen’s United victory in the Supreme Court. The Court ruled that corporations were people, and money was free speech protected by the First Amendment.  The floodgates opened for dark money to swamp elections. Adam Schiff (Rep D-CA30) just  introduced  H.J.Res.13, an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to overturn that 2010 ruling. There are 68 co-sponsors and NY19 Rep. Pat Ryan is NOT yet one of them (nor is NY19 Rep. Marc Molinaro).

The proposed amendment protects freedom of the press but permits Congress and the states to impose nonpartisan regulations on political fundraising, support public campaign financing, and “distinguish between natural persons and corporations or other artificial entities created by law, including by prohibiting such entities from spending money to influence elections.”

Call to Action

After 13 years of Citizens United, we need to protect the voice of the American voter and combat dark money’s corrupting influence over our elections more vigorously than ever.

Let’s reclaim our democracy.

Script: Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.  I know that Congressman [Adam] Schiff has introduced an amendment to reduce the corrupting role of money and corporate wealth in our politics. Since the increasingly huge flood of dark money into our politics is one of the key sources of weakness in our democracy, I urge Congressman [Ryan,  Molinaro] to co-sponsor and to support this amendment. Will he?
