In solidarity with the Women’s March taking place on January 22, 2023, let’s urge our electeds to keep reproductive freedom on the center stage, and not to rest until it is codified in our Constitution.

Background:

The 117th Congressional House of Representatives (2020-22) passed one bill protecting women’s reproductive freedom.

H.R. 3755—Women’s Health Protection Act of 2021
Sponsored by Rep. Judy Chu (D–CA 27) and introduced in the House on June 6, 2021. The bill would have prohibited governmental restrictions on the provision of and access to, abortion services. It passed the House but failed in the U.S. Senate (as S.1975) because of the filibuster.

A second proposed bill was introduced by Rep. Pat Ryan (D–NY 19) on September 23, 2022:

H.R. 8976—Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act of 2021
Its scope was far more limited than HR3755.  Its intent was to “preempt State restrictions on dispensing mifepristone or misoprostol” (both indicated for medical abortions). The bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where it has remained, and never voted on by the House.  It does not yet have a sister bill in the U.S. Senate.

Script for Reps. Ryan and Molinaro:

This is (your name) from (your town, county). As January 22, 2023 is the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion a constitutional right until the U.S. Supreme Court repealed it last year, I’m urging Congressman [Ryan, Molinaro] to publicly support the re-introduction and passage of H.R. 3755—Women’s Health Protection Act and H.R. 8976—Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act. The lives and well-being of millions of women depend on timely passage of these bills.

Script for Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand:

This is (your name) from (your town, county). As January 22, 2023 is the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion a constitutional right until the U.S. Supreme Court repealed it last year, I’m urging Senator [Schumer, Gillibrand] to publicly support the re-introduction and passage of S1975—Women’s Health Protection Act. The lives and well-being of millions of women depend on timely passage of these bills.
