The disastrous Southern Norfolk freight train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, is a wakeup call for all Ulster County residents. Throughout the year, thousands of CSX freight trains carrying highly flammable and toxic materials pass through Ulster County. Please contact your elected representatives and demand immediate action to strengthen laws and regulations to insure our safety and to help prevent a disaster from happening in our own backyard the future.

Call our Senators:
Sen, Kristen Gillibrand: Tel. (202) 224-4451
Sen. Chuck Schumer: Tel. (202) 224-6542

I’m calling because I understand a bill has just been introduced by Ohio senators Sherrod Brown and J.D. Vance that would strengthen notification and inspection requirements for trains carrying hazardous materials, increase fines for safety violations by rail carriers, and authorize $27 million for research on safety improvements. This bill only begins to demand measures that prioritize public safety over excessive profiteering by railroad corporations. I urge the Senator to sign on as a co-sponsor. Since the East Palestine disastrous derailment, another Norfolk Southern freight train has derailed in Ohio. We need immediate action.

Call Your Congressman:
Rep. Pat Ryan (NY18); Tel. 202-225-5614
Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY19): Tel. (202) 225-5441

I’m calling because I understand that Reps Chris Deluzio (D-PA) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) just introduced the Decreasing Emergency Railroad Accident Instances Locally Act (DERAIL). This bill requires the Department of Transportation to modify and tighten the definition of ‘‘high-hazard flammable train.” This bill only begins to demand full and accurate reporting–measures that prioritize public safety over excessive profiteering by railroad corporations. Since the East Palestine disastrous derailment, another Norfolk Southern freight train has derailed in Ohio. We need immediate action. Will the Congressman sign on as an original co-sponsor?
