About Indivisible Ulster

Indivisible Ulster is a pro-democracy group that is part of the national Indivisible movement. We are volunteers based in and around Ulster County, which is represented by Congressional Districts 18 and 19.

What We Stand For

Our shared mission is to:

  • Defend the United States Constitution against anti-democratic extremism.
  • Expose and fight against media and social platforms that amplify conspiratorial messages and misinforms/disinforms the public.
  • Focus on local, state, and congressional advocacy. We expect our elected representatives and local public officials to serve as our voice at all levels of government.
  • Embrace and model progressive economic and social justice values of inclusion, respect, and fairness in all our actions.
  • Collaborate with other political action groups to strengthen and preserve our democratic government through constituent power.

Why We Exist

Indivisible Ulster was formed in 2017 in response to Trump’s first election—but we know that Trump is a symptom of a sick democracy, not its cause. We face two fundamental problems: first, our democracy was rigged from the start in favor of the white and rich; second, in the last few decades, an alliance of white nationalists and the ultra-rich has been actively working to further undermine democracy and cement their hold on power permanently. That’s how we ended up with Trump. We must build a democracy that reflects a broad, multiracial “we the people,” one that works for all of us and is sustained by all of us. Only then will we be able to achieve a progressive vision for our future.

When We Meet

We meet every Friday between 12pm-1pm EST.

How We Organize to Win

  • Our opponents rely on a divide-and-conquer strategy, so we treat an attack on one as an attack on all. We stand together, especially for those facing the brunt of right-wing ideologies—often immigrants, people of color, and low-income individuals. We share a vision of a true democracy, of, by, and for everyone.
  • Inside/Outside Strategy: We understand systems of power, such as Congress, and work within them to achieve results. This complements our outside strategy, which involves local constituent pressure to demand that elected leaders—regardless of political party—serve our democracy.
  • We advocate for policy wins in off-years and mobilize voters in election years. These efforts reinforce one another to ensure our democracy serves everyone and that those in power do too—or we will replace them with those who will.
