Despite not having universal healthcare, the United States also spends a significantly higher share of its GDP on healthcare compared to peer countries like France, Germany, Canada, and Australia that have universal healthcare. A report finds that 30% of this excessive spending is due to the administrative burden of navigating insurance companies, and 10% is due to high prescription drug prices. Both of these costs would be significantly reduced under a single-payer universal healthcare plan. At the federal level, this proposal is Medicare for All, and at the state level, it’s the New York Health Act.
