On December 14, the FCC is planning to change the internet in a way that is good for Verizon, Optimum, Spectrum, and other large corporations… but terrible for you and me. This change will result in higher costs and reduced access to the websites and internet services that we use every day. This is not a partisan issue: citizens from across the political spectrum are coming together to defend our rights to a free and open internet.
Join us on December 7 for a national day of protest to let the FCC and the internet providers know that this change is bad for you, bad for America, and must be stopped.
NET NEUTRALITY is a principle that applies to all internet service providers. (Your internet service provider is whoever sends you a bill every month for your home or business internet service). Net neutrality comes from an FCC regulation known as Title II. A few years ago, the largest providers came up with a plan to create fast and slow lanes on the internet, allowing them to cripple sites like Netflix unless they paid special fees for faster service; the FCC used Title II to block this plan after a massive public outcry. But now they’re trying again, and the repeal of Title II protections is looking likely.
Without net neutrality, internet providers could slow down or restrict access to any websites or apps they choose, including video streaming services and online shopping sites that compete with their own offerings. The only way into the fast lane would be for these sites to pay. This would mean higher costs and crushing restrictions on our ability to use the internet.
Internet providers are already announcing their plans to make more money by making it harder for you and me to use the internet. It’s time to tell the FCC that Title II protections need to stay.
TAKE ACTION. Here are three things you can do to help defend your ability to use the internet every day:
1. ATTEND THE PROTEST. Meet on December 7 at noon outside the Verizon store, on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. Learn more and sign up here: https://
2. CALL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Rep. Maloney are strong supporters of net neutrality protections. Rep. Faso’s position is not well known. Encourage all of your elected officials to use their influence to stop the FCC from making this change.
– Sen. Schumer: (518) 431-4070
– Sen. Gillibrand: (518) 431-0120
– Rep. Maloney (NY-18): (202) 225-5441
– Rep. Faso (NY-19): (202) 225-5614
