Starting on July 20th, the New York State Redistricting Commission will be hosting a series of virtual public hearings, organized by region, to provide New Yorkers an opportunity to share information about their communities and discuss how district lines can be improved. The Commission will incorporate the public’s input and use gathered testimony to draw district lines. Each hearing will start at 2 PM and the schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, July 20: Nassau and Suffolk counties
Thursday, July 22: Queens county
Monday, July 26: Bronx and New York counties
Thursday, July 29: Kings and Richmond counties
Monday, August 2: Mid-Hudson Valley and Capital Region
Thursday, August 5: North Country and Mohawk Valley
Monday, August 9: Southern Tier and Central NY
Thursday, August 12: Finger Lakes and Western NY
Sharing testimony at a redistricting hearing is a powerful way of shaping your community’s district maps for the next decade to come. By participating in hearings, you can ensure that your communities are accounted for and are best represented in the legislative process. To share your thoughts with the Commission, make sure to register to attend a hearing for your region and testify or submit written testimony without attending a hearing.
To go over the redistricting timeline, teach you how to draw your own community maps, and draft compelling testimony, Common Cause NY will be hosting and recording a virtual training on Wednesday, July 21st at 2 pm.
